Whirlwind Tours are Exhausting

This gallivanting about England and Scotland has been great fun, but also rather wearing. One last bit of tourism later today, then the plane back to the 'States is tomorrow. It's rather nice finally having a bit of time to relax here in the cafe in Edinburgh, though. It's a nice city. I probably shouldn't fancy it near so much in its winter, however, considering the steepness of the streets and the latitude. :P

Perhaps I'll think of more to write about the trip later, but for now I'm going to go find more ways to play tourist.

"random" sprint binding in CoH

This is sparked off a discussion with syrusb on the LJ global channel. She was asking for a way to toggle random sprint effects. The gist of the request was to be able to toggle on a random prestige sprint, hit the same key again to toggle it off, then next time it'd choose (maybe) a different one.

Unfortunately, there's no way to do 'random' for yourself in CoH. The best you can do with the /bind interface is to cycle through things. Getting multiple powers to toggle on and off with the same key is also something that requires using extra files to handle. (Yes, toggling things on with a button-mash doesn't need that. The requirement was for 'off' as well as 'on'.)

So, here's the scoop. It requires multiple files in the data folder underneath where CoH (or CoV) is installed. In the default case that means the full directory path to these files is C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data. This is where CoH looks for keybind files when a full path isn't given. There's a limit to how long a binding can be, so I like to keep the keybinding files in that location. Anyway, I'll show the files with their corresponding contents like so:

At least some of the contents will wrap across multiple lines as displayed here, but it's required that each is really just one line when stored. So, here's the list, using "DECIMAL" as the key to be bound (that's "." on the number pad).

This includes ordinary sprint in the list of powers to be used. If that's not desired, change the filename used at the end of whichever one you want to be last in the rotation to be "sprint-all-off.txt". For example, if you wanted neither sprint nor the slide, you'd change sprint-rush-on.txt like this:

Of course, that's a lot of files to change if you don't like the binding I chose. Life with bind files is like that. Sorry. Also, to get it going the first time, you'll want to load one of them (probably sprint-all-off.txt), like so:

/bind_load_file sprint-all-off.txt

The main thing to note if you're trying to follow along as that each time we toggle a sprint off, we don't depend on the previous state. This toggles all sprints off. The 'on' variants only need to turn on the desired sprint, since they're mutually exclusive (turning one on automatically turns the others off). Otherwise, the files then also load the next one in sequence to re-bind the key for the next use.

Anyway, I've put a zip archive of these files up for retrieval, just in case anyone cares. Depending on feedback, I might try other topics on keybindings, but I am so not a technical writer, it's not funny.

I just started getting my 15-20 tier contacts. So I go talk to Virgina Hoffman in west Steel, 'cause I don't remember her wanting me to go do overly stupid things (read: vahzilok) from the few times I've dealt with her before. After half an hour, I still don't know whether I remember right, because of the level 15 crap they've added, some of it fresh with I8. "Go from west boondocks in Steel to south bumfuck in Skyway to talk to the pvp timewaster, to read red text they could have told you about from this contact if they'd been nice, and yes you have to do this even though it's the fiftieth time and you already knew the FIRST time that you have an active disinterest in pvp." Ok, go do that shit, and hoof it back to Steel because, as alluded to above, this is a new contact with no phone privileges yet. "Oh, now, you get to go fuck with the new faultline even though you've no real interest in that either after your experiences on test or with other characters, back in south Skyway again - and still with no alternative and no way to get a real mission from this contact." I've said it since the fifth time I had to go see David Wincott - there should be a "no thanks, what else do you have" option for these damned "we couldn't think of a better way to splice in this content than by interrupting your progress in what you were doing" extra contact introductions. As in, "Fine, you've given me the letter of introduction, now how about a fucking MISSION!" ::sigh:: Yes, I'm severely hacked off at the CoH devs right now, and posting this only to my own journal because, even if I cleaned up the language, nobody else is likely to care about my rant.

hospitals are not good for sleeping

It's true. My doctor confirmed it. Anyway, for those who might care but didn't already know, I spent most of this last week in the hospital for pneumonia, pleurisy, and partial lung collapse. A fun time was had by none.

Some of you may remember that I commented on the LJ global channel that pneumonia was no fun on Saturday the 17th. Well, here's how the events led up to that.

The longer version is that I came down with a 'flu or something Sunday (just about two weeks ago). It seemed to be passing ok, except that I was having some trouble breathing and some pain in odd places. I figured maybe I'd strained a muscle, but it kept spreading. By Friday it was obvious I was not healthy, but that was a nasty slushy day, and I thought maybe I'd either get over it or at least be able to tough it out until Monday. (By the time the driveway was clear enough to have taken me somewhere, it would have been the e-room anyway). HMOs being what they are, I didn't want to eat an e-room bill if I didn't need to. Well, by late Saturday, I was really hurting, and tried to take a nap. I determined that I wasn't going to breathe while lying down, and got up again. My housemate took me into the e-room about 1am, and after the usual weekend e-room triage folderol, chest X-rays, etc., I was admitted by 6am. Morphine and prednisone are wonderful vs. pleurisy. Too bad I didn't get to keep those going. :=P Anyway, got discharged about noon on Thursday. I'm now home with a nebulizer and a pile of drugs and new inhalers. Such fun. Still not lying down to sleep, but that's mostly because of how much it hurts to get up again afterward when I haven't had Motrin or Percocet before trying.

So now I'm under doctors' orders to have a quiet Christmas, and not to try being more than about half-time at work for a while. At least I finally got my 'flu vaccine out of this....

laptop is back!

Finally got my slightly refurbished laptop (new 'shell' and motherboard) back Thursday at work. They did save my system disc, so not much was lost. Just had to apply about a month's worth of security patches and I6. (: It's SOOOOO NICE to be able to see some textures again, and have frame rates above 2.7! Whee!!!!

Well, I'm still without my laptop. I've been playing from a borrowed/shared computer, and its graphics card sucks. So I'm not teaming as much as usual, since I can't keep up when things start flying. I miss my mastermind's pets, since I had lag-beating strategies for CoV. So, come midnight, I guess it'll be back to villainy for me for a while. I may not like the cruddy graphics card I'm stuck using, but at least I like the games still. (:

My laptop is belly-up with overheating problems. Anyone who was expecting me to be on CoH tonight for gaming -- sorry, but I can't be.

Yes, my leagueofjustus character Adriellyn hit 50 last night (more like this morning, about 0250 local time). [That's on Triumph, for those not in the know.]

For those who are sick enough to care, cohdemo files for playback with "CityofHeroes.exe -demoplay <file>" are available. [I'm not sure of the exact syntax to make it work, check the forums if you're curious and don't already know. Then tell me. (:] The trip to ding, and the celebration afterward, which will probably make you seasick. I bounced a lot. (:

Those files are marked as .txt to help be sure browsers will download them. They may have to be named .cohdemo and not .cohdemo.txt for playback. I didn't check.

My new warshade, Chernaya (on Triumph), made level 4 before I decided that I needed a quick nap before work.

It's interesting (to me) because it's more thoughtfully designed than a lot of such tests, not because I cared that much about which answer I got. I don't think it's perfect, but it's definitely a cut above in my experience with these sorts of tests.
